Heath: Village of Mansions

In the 1970s John Rennie a South African architect described Heath as: A delightful mixture of disorderly irregularly sited dwellings and consciously formally placed houses. This film provides a tour of many of Heaths buildings and other features of historical interest. The Golf House opened in 1897 to serve a 9 hole golf course. The Whittling Well was constructed in the eighteenth century as a source of fresh water for livestock. Heath Common Pinfold was an enclosure used by the local Pinfold to keep stray livestock. The Old School House was the original village school built in 1660. In 1873 this was replaced by the Victorian School House. The Kings Arms pub is made up of a series of buildings dating from the 15th to 17th centuries. Cobblers Hall was used as a finishing school for men going into the armed forces from 1749 to the 1780s. Most of the Mansions were built by some of Wakefields wool barons. Heath Hall is probably the most spectacular of Heaths mansions built in 1707. The Priests House is a mid to late seventeenth century building located near the gateway to Heath Old Hall. Heath Old Hall was built by George Ramsden in 1595 and was considered an excellent example of Elizabethan architecture. The Water Tower provided water for Heath Old Hall and is a good example of pre-modern hydraulic engineering. Dame Mary Bolles is probably Heaths most famous past resident born in 1579 and resident of Heath Old Hall. She experience an eventful period of English history.
