Binaural beats are an auditory experience that emerges when two tones with slightly distinct frequencies are played to each ear independently. When this occurs our brain detects a third tone which is the difference between the two original frequencies. This third tone isnt actually present in the sounds being playedits an auditory illusion. People have tapped into this phenomenon for a variety of applications such as meditation relaxation cognitive enhancement and even sleep improvement. If a 300 Hz sound is played to the left ear and a 310 Hz sound to the right your brain creates a third tone of 10 Hzthe binaural beat. Brainwave ranges used in this video: Delta waves 0.5 Hz - 4 Hz: Common In children up to a year old and during stages 3 and 4 of deep sleep in adults delta waves serve as the dominant brainwave. During this state the body recovers and resets its internal clocks. By stimulating these brainwaves the bodys recovery process is accelerated. Additionally evidence indicates that brainwave synchronization in this brainwave range can assist in alleviating pain. Theta waves 4 Hz - 8 Hz: Theta waves are synonymous with states of deep meditation and relaxation. Many creative individuals including artists often find inspiration when accessing these brainwaves. This brainwave range is also instrumental in enhancing intuitive nonlinear approaches to problem-solving. Furthermore theres potential for enhanced learning in this state especially when paired with focused study or information intake. Alpha waves 8 Hz - 14 Hz: The alpha state represents the brains resting phase promoting mental coordination. It plays a significant role in clearing the mind drawing it into the present moment. Brainwave synchronization in the alpha range has been linked to a more tranquil mind and decreased anxiety levels. These binaural beats are based upon the brainwave entrainment phenomenon. Our brains tend to synchronize to external stimulation including auditory visual tactile or electromagnetic stimuli. The human brain has an average of 86 billion neurons that communicate to form our thoughts emotions and behavior. When our neurons communicate en masse it produces a synchronized electrical pulse a brainwave. With neural entrainment our brainwaves can synchronize to this auditory stimulation. As a result we can stimulate our neurons and induce brainwaves in ways that could positively affect our psychology and physiology.
