MAKING SENSE Colloquium Centre Pompidou Paris 19-20102010 Call for Participation Making Sense is a loose and expanding collective of artists and thinkers engaged in making sense which as we conceive it denotes an act of reflection that is at once theoretical and practical accessible and inclusive. While diverse in our practices and our disciplines we have a common striving to cross between modes of doing and thinking art and philosophy especially within the contemporary context. We held our inaugural colloquium in September 2009 in collaboration with Jean-Luc Nancy at the University of Cambridge. The event drew together about forty artists and theoreticians who brought forward interventions in the form of oral presentations video performance theatre and dance. In the face of the success of this initiative we meet again in 2010 in Paris. Our main speaker for this event is the French philosopher Bernard Stiegler. Bernard Stiegler has since 2006 been director of the Institut de recherche et dinnovation IRI at the Centre Georges Pompidou. His research is centred around philosophies of technology questions of desire and the figure of the amateur which he defines in opposition to that of the consumer in the context of an emerging economy of contribution. One of his theses is particularly relevant to the Making Sense project: he argues that there is only art and mind inasmuch as there is discernment i.e. judgment. This faculty of judgment which is also a faculty of sensing can only be accomplished through critical apparatuses enabling amateurs to cultivate practices of creation analysis and the transformation of intellectual works. This conference will draw together thinkers and artists engaged in the worlds of art aesthetic philosophy and contemporary theory to provide live source material for debate and further research as well as to form an interface between artistic creation theoretical debate and academic scholarship. Rather than formal papers being presented in closed 20-minute slots this colloquium is an experimental forum that encourages reaction and debate. The format of the event will be choreographed around presentations and responses to the plenary speakers shorter bursts of ideas that respond to the questions raised below and artistic installation and performance. We seek participants to: a present or perform their responses in a 30-minute individual or collaborative presentation that includes 15 minute s of discussion. This colloquium intends to incorporate discussion as an important part of the process of making sense. b act as artists-in-residence who will create artwork during course of the colloquium the use of new technology is encouraged. c who will perform or display artwork during the evening between the two days of the colloquium. d attend as an audience participant. This will include active audience participation throughout the colloquium as well as a workshop that will involve an opportunity for collective artistic creation. Delegates will be charged 15 euros to attend the event if they reserve in advance it will be 20 euros at the door this fee will be waived for those who are presenting performing or participating as an artist-in-residence. Theoretical propositions didactic without academic jargon that have a practical impact. New genres of writing that engage and respond to live visual and performance art works. Creative writing or artistic expression that responds to making sense. Personal accounts of direct aesthetic experiences. Performances and installations inviting reflection on the act of making sense. In addition abstracts should respond specifically to one or more of the following questions that will be discussed: o Making sense -- what do you think this means? What form would it take? How might it be curated or choreographed? o What language can we develop to discuss art and performance? o The aesthetic encounter and the act of creating an artwork: how can these experiences be analysed written about and deployed effectively? o How can we create a movement for change in philosophical and art discourses? o How do new technologies impact on art and more broadly how does art relate to technique? Closing date for proposals: June 30 2010 Responses by the end of July 2010,
