ZX81/TS100 From Old To New: Part 1 (Intro & Regulator Replacement)

I know I've done a few videos on these before but I thought it *might* be interesting to do one from start to finish. So here's a Timex Sinclair 1000 (the US version of the Sinclair ZX81) going from unknown state (built in 1982) to modern 2022 state. This first part is a quick comparison and then replacing the 7805 regulator with a modern one. I already have a video about converting to composite video output but I'll do another ... better (??) ... one for this particular machine: Other parts to come: replacing the RAM, replacing the keyboard, replacing capacitors, maybe replacing the ULA. ZX81

The ZX81 is a home computer produced by Sinclair Research and manufactured in Scotland by Timex Corporation. It was launched in the United Kingdom in March 1981 as the successor to Sinclair's ZX80 and was designed to be a low-cost introduction to home computing for the general public. It was hugely successful and more than 1.5 million units were sold before it was eventually discontinued. The ZX81 found commercial success in many other countries, notably the United States, where it was initially sold as the ZX-81. Timex manufactured and distributed it under licence and enjoyed a substantial but brief boom in sales.
