Here’s another one of my favourite storybooks for young English language learners. Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell is a classic lift-the-flap book. It’s the story of a child who writes a letter to the zoo asking for pet. The zoo sends a seletion of boxes each containing a different animal – a giraffe, an elephant, a monkey etc. The storybook’s colourful illustrations, simple and repetitive text help ESL students comprehend and memorise the language and the fun lift-the-flaps bring elements of surprise and guess work.
