Khatia Buniatishvili, Neeme Järvi and the Verbier Festival Orchestra perform Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 at the Verbier Festival in 2011. Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 – 1943) wrote his third Piano Concerto in 1909 at the Ivanovka country estate 550 kilometers south east of Moscow. Rachmaninoff spent the summer months here from 1890 until his emigration to the US in 1917. The three movements of the piece recall the structure of typical solo concerts of the Romantic era. Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 was premiered by the New York Symphony Orchestra on November 28, 1909 in New York, conducted by Walter Damrosch. Rachmaninoff is widely considered one of the finest pianists of his day and, as a composer, one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music. Early influences of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and other Russian composers gave way to a thoroughly personal idiom notable for its song-like melodicism, expressiveness and rich orchestral colours. This must be the first time in 20 years Pletnev has done a full Rachmaninoff Concerto cycle. Needless to say this is very different from Yuja's take. The slow tempi - now familiar from the Verbier renditions of PC1 and PC2 - have spilled over into PC3 and PC4 too. Pletnev is also no longer playing the ossia cadenza in PC3. Arranged from the Sonata for Cello and Piano by Warren Cohen, who is conducting the MusicaNova Orchestra with cellist Peter Eom, on October 23rd 2011 at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. An introduction to the work is on a separate video, which gives some history of the work. The cello part in this work differs significantly from the Cello Sonata. In order to make the work a Concerto, some of the piano filigree has been rewritten to be playable on the cello. The idea was to create a work that was about as difficult for the cellist as the Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos are for the pianist.
