"It was a late night, and I was at home in London and I got my dad’s old piano that used to be at our house in Liverpool. It’s a great sound and obviously the whole vibe, because it was my dad’s. I played it as a kid, and he played it, it’s a nice instrument to play. So I just came up with that. And pretty much just wrote what you hear in the song, except for the third verses and the middle 8 and things, but it kind of wrote itself. When you do that, that’s going to be you. Paul McCartney released his album Flaming Pie on this day in 1997, so I used that as the kick in the derriere that I needed to record this song, which is a longtime favorite of mine (some of you will know by now how I feel about a good Pensive Acoustic Ballad). The album overall is widely considered one of Paul's best, and it was partly inspired by his then-recent travels through the Beatles archive and his memories during the Anthology project. This song, in particular, is yet another one of his absolutely fabulous odes to his wife Linda (who would sadly pass away less than a year after this album was released), interwoven with general reflections on the passing of the years and the troubling aspects of life.
