This lecture examines the origin and development of the attitude of the Russian Church to warfare in church-historical and theological aspects. In particular, the author pays great attention to the theological understanding of war in the context of understanding imperial power and the position of the Church in the Russian Empire during the Synodal period (18th–20th cc.). Attention will also be paid to the evolution of the theology of war from the full acceptance of imperial projects and conquests in the 18th and early 19th centuries to the emergence of Christian pacifism in a church environment in the second half of the 19th century.
