Parallel Scara Robot- Mechatronics Capstone Project

Our group's final project for the Mechatronics Bachelors program at Clover Park Technical College, Lakewood, WA, USA. Custom designed and built from various parts, a couple of Teknic servos, various proprietary and online coding. Our 3 member team chose this project to demonstrate our skills and challenge ourselves for our final Mechatronics Capstone project. We used various disciplines: mechanical, electrical, programming, kinematics, CAD, machining, 3D printing and project management. The parallel scara (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm) is typically seen in small compact pick and place operations and novel 3D printing (as of this writing). Initial diagnosis was P17BF - (Loss of pressure - To explain this in detail, the accumulator inside the mechatronic unit does the job of imitating a human pressing down the clutch. When this part can’t do its job, shifts either become jerky / does not shift at all. Imagine yourself half clutching / not pressing the clutch at all) Usually, what happens is, the housing in which this accumulator is screwed into, breaks causing an inability to maintain the target pressure, but in my case, the o-ring in between the accumulator and housing disintegrated. This is a quick time lapse video of me replacing the solenoids on my 2004 545i transmission valve body. Sorry, I had the resolution set as high as it would go on my camera on accident, so I ran out of memory card space before I got all the way through this. I was originally going to show a lot more detail on taking the valve body/mechatronics apart and how the replace the solenoids & reinstall everything. Hopefully this still helps someone though. Typically BMW will tell you to replace the entire transmission when there are any issues or at the very least, sell you an entirely new valve body/mechatronics unit at the cost of a kidney on the black market. The flux I used is named F61A , it seems to be Russian and it is the best I have tested until now. For the first soldering part you can use normal soldering wire, but for the second you need to use some silver based soldering wire so it solders on the aluminum thin connectors.
