Francesco Hayez was born in 1791 in Murano, Italy, the fifth son of poor parents. He was raised by an aunt who was married to a wealthy shipowner who collected art. Young Frencesco showed a predilection for drawing, so he was apprenticed by his new uncle-in-law to an art restorer. Later, still in his teens, he was accepted as an art student by Francisco Magiotto, and in 1806 he was admitted to the new Academy of Fine Arts where he studied under Teodoro Matteini. He also studied in Rome for five years. Hayez usually painted religious, historical, and mythological subjects, as well as portraits of prominent Italians of the 19th century.
