Today I will be talking about princess cuts. While cushions, and recently ovals, have seen an upwards trend, Princess cuts hold a comfortable lead as the second most popular diamond after round cuts. The modern princess cut has been around for more than 50 years. Princess cuts are very versatile when it comes to setting style. From elegant solitaires to elaborate halos, princess cuts always seem to fit comfortably and look fantastic. They are also extremely popular with diamond manufacturers as cutting a princess cut gives them a higher yield from the rough than with any other shape. This is one of the reasons that, despite its popularity, princess cuts are cheaper per carat than most other shapes. Princess cuts generally come from a cleaner type of rough diamond. This means that it's much easier to find a princess cut with fewer inclusions than it is with other shapes. It's a good thing too, as the larger table makes those inclusions more noticeable. With most cuts, it is preferable to find diamonds where the inclusions are on the edges, away from the table. That is not always the case with princess cuts. Pay close attention that there are no inclusions near the corners of the diamond. The sharp edges, while hard, can be brittle. Any significant imperfection in that area may weaken the integrity of the diamond. It would be a shame to invest so much time and money into finding a diamond ring, only to have the corner chip off when banging it on a table. When picking out a princess cut diamond, we recommend an I color or better for most engagement rings. If you are going with a halo setting, stick with H+ for the color. These colors will look perfectly clear once set and you get much better bang for your buck than you would buying a colorless diamond. This will ensure that you are getting exactly what you paid for, without any hidden characteristics that devalue the diamond.
