To learn more about Mocana’s cutting-edge technology for IoT and other devices, go to https://www.mocana.com/technology When you think about securing IoT devices, you are looking at a massive issue – and opportunity. With something simple like a light bulb (or take your pick…sensors on a remote oil platform…HVAC units on a smart building…or FUSA related braking components on an autonomous car), the operations team used to be entirely disconnected from IT. Before, it was just a matter of screwing-in the bulb. Now that this light bulb is IP connected and streaming data to some IOT control platform, we have introduced a new friction for IT that wants proper security, and OT that wants deployment fast. A Kaiser Associates research study of IOT teams and the ecosystem shows that this process typically takes 20-50 min and nearly 11 distinct manual device configuration steps. Translated out to our use case, this is over 2 man years- a very costly proposition for customers and the ecosystem. Intel has spent the last few years working with the industry to help solve this scaling and security issue so that all Intel and ARM devices can be on-boarded and put in use to catch back up to the 50 billion IOT devices that will be in service by 2020. Intel® Secure Device Onboard (Intel® SDO) is a service that enables a device to be drop-shipped and powered on to dynamically provision to a customer’s IOT platform of choice in seconds. This zero touch model simplifies the installer’s role and scales the number of devices that can securely and automatically deployed in production. Intel® SDO eliminates poor security practices such as shipping default passwords and delivers a break-through device privacy and identity model for IoT. With a single imaging step for zero touch on-boarding, device makers can mass produce devices and leave configuration to Intel® SDO. Customers are gravitating to this model as an essential scaling mechanism to go from POC to production deployment volumes where manual on-boarding has a prohibitive cost. Here is the automatic out-of-box Provisioning Process: • Device is drop-shipped to installation location • Ownership Proxy acts as a “ticket” to take control of device • Distributed Trust with direct device/cloud 2-way authentication • Installation is automated (scripted) to ensure repeatability and reliability • Just-in-time installation cert binding • Just-in-time installation script and procedures can take the burden off of device management for spares, warehoused devices, etc. The robot demonstration conducted in this demo/presentation shows this process. Once the device is authenticated by Mocana, the process is complete and the robotic arm can proceed to do its assigned tasks. Using this new streamlined process end-to-end, we find that, on average, we have automated 11 costly manual steps the ecosystem performs today to a single enablement step that gets us to that zero-touch model.
