To express a refusal or a deliberate action not being taken: I am not answering that phone call. She is not taking the bus today. To emphasize the non-occurrence of an activity in progress: The children are not sleeping yet. He is not studying for his exams tonight. Notes: "Am," "is," and "are" are the auxiliary verbs used with the subject (I, he/she/it, we/you/they respectively). "Not" is placed directly after the auxiliary verb to form the negative. The main verb is always in the -ing form (present participle).
