A beautiful hand pattern in bellydance is a hand infinity loop or a figure 8 with the center in your wrist. So visualize the figure 8 shape - 2 circles connected in the middle. Now imagine your wrist is the middle of this figure 8 - relax your fingers, elongate them... We are going to draw a figure 8 with the tips of our fingers on the wall in front of us. Here it is....One circle and the other circle...One circle and the other circle...your wrist is in the middle. This is our figure 8 or an infinity loop. We call it a wrist figure 8 - actually it's the hand that draws our figure 8 but the wrist initiates the movement. Keep your fingers relaxed in a neutral position. Just let your hand hang like this - see what position your fingers assume when they r elaxed and just let your hand take this position when you draw your figure 8. You can make these figure 8s big, or keep them more shallow. I use this movement to initiate arm patterns and hand gestures. For instance, wrist figure 8s initiate lifting of the arms into a pose...like this... Or it can be combined with a gesture - first plain version - I can extend my arm and bring it to my heart... and now I'll do this with wrist figure 8s layered on this gesture. Look.... The next layer of skill here is to combine wrist figure 8s with hand undulations. Review the technique for hand undulations in our hand undulation segment. Here is this hand wave... Now layer it on wrist figure 8, and we have this... a very fluid and ornate articulation of your hand. You can lift your arm and let it descend with this hand pattern... your hand is like a sheet of silk fabric, undulating and swirling as it falls down. Pelvic tuck... and release...are important basic elements of bellydance technique, and dance moves in their own right that are often layered on footwork and combined with hipwork. Tuck in.....and release... If you perform release as an accent, it will be a pelvic drop: tuck in....drop. In our normal dance posture your pelvis is in the neutral position, right under your spine. A number of bellydance moves utilize the swinging motion of the pelvis - forward and back past the neutral position. tuck in, release --- tuck in, release Tuck in involves a lower abs contraction... contract right here... when I release my pelvis, I don't let my stomach hang - control it - your abs should be always engaged, even in the released position. It's as if your pelvis is swinging back and forth from an axis that goes through your hips tuck in, release Keep your knees slightly bent During the tuck in, See I am not pushing my hips forward - this will be a different movement. All we do here is rotation... rotate forward, rotate back You released your pelvis toward the back: now you can gently return it to the neutral position, or tuck it in sharply as an accent release.....back to neutral or release... tuck in sharply release...tuck in. It's a pelvic lock up. For this movement you use mostly your rectus abdominis and psoas muscles, and it's importat to not release your tail all the way where your lower back can get overextended - - this may cause discomfort or even lower back pain. Control this movement. To control this lower back curve it is crucial to keep your abs engaged. So first make sure your lower abs right here are working, everything is firm here, then release your pelvis without relaxing your muslces. Snake arms is a bellydance arm wave - here it is.... Let us take just one arm and break down this move. Visually this movement is dominated by your elbow floating up and down. Your arm come up - your elbow points up.... your arm descends - your elbow points down... However, you initiate this movement with the rotation of your shoulder forward. This is super important. You need to make this shoulder rotation purposeful, feel resistance here as you initiate this arm wave. Rotate your shoulder forward and press it down simultaneously so that it doesn't come up. The shoulders stay as far from your ears as possible. keep them down...The shoulder rotation involves the muscles of your upper back and your pectoral muscles - your pecs right here. Don't bring your shoulder blades together - ever, chest is lifted back is open. If you don't make this shoulder rotation strong and purposeful, your snake arms will be limp and floppy - you need to work hard with your upper back to make this movement fluid. So you rotate your shoulder, your elbow starts climbing up... in this area the wrist always preceeds the hand - the hand follows, it has this wind-swept look. Now the elbow points down and starts descending and your wrist again gets ahead of your hand... This lag in the hand movement is important to give this movement a fluid, languid quality. So it's shoulder, elbow, wrist and fingers. And going down... press your shoulder down it rotates toward the back now... elbow comes down first... then your wrist and your fingers... Both arms now - one is climbing up the other is descending. You are working with your upper back and shoulders. Once you are comfortable with this arm wave, you can add hand undulation - it's optional - relaxed elongated fingers look great, you don't have to undulate them. But if you choose to add hand undulation , here is how it will look... Your wrist starts descending and this triggers the hand undulation. Your wrist is the highest point...start arching your hand... Bellydance body wave or an undulation can be layered on travel steps - it's a very fluid move giving your dance that serpentine look. Here is our regular bellydance undulation. You start it with a vertical chest circle that travels toward the back and continue with a series of abdominal contractions traveling down your body. You finish with bending your knees slightly and releasing your pelvis toward the back. Here is our undulation... Let us combine it with a regular walk.. step... step... and now steps with undulations... and walking back.... Now technique. Start by learning to walk with chest lifts. Every time you make a step, lift your chest. step chest lift....step chest lift....step chest lift.... As your chest goes down, exaggerate the abdominal contraction Step - chest up, lift your other foot off the floor - abdominal contraction... step chest up...left your foot off the floor - abdominal contraction... We start a regular undulation with a vertical chest circle toward the back, and our abdominal contractions travel down the body. In a reversed undulation abs contractions travel up - lower abs, middle, upper and we finish with the vertical chest circle forward. So this position with your chest forward is the starting point for a regular undulation and the finishing point for a reversed undulation. Start your reversed undulation with your knees slightly bent, your pelvis released toward the back.
