W ramach cyklu "Fizyka wokół nas" wykład pt. "Czy tablica Mendelejewa jest skończona?" wygłosił dr Paweł J. Napiórkowski ze Środowiskowego Laboratorium Ciężkich Jonów na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim. W 1869 roku Dmitrij Mendelejew przestawił swój układ okresowy pierwiastków. Dziś, w 150 lat od tego wydarzenia, obchodzimy Międzynarodowy Rok Układu Okresowego ogłoszony przez UNESCO. Wydzielanie i identyfikacja pierwiastków przez stulecia były domeną chemików. I to oni zaczęli wypełniać luki w tablicy Mendelejewa w pierwszych latach po jej ogłoszeniu. Ale wraz z odkryciem promieniotwórczości i jądra atomowego na początku XX wieku fizycy jądrowi wcielili się w rolę współczesnych alchemików. I to w ich rękach znajdują się narzędzia, którymi od siedemdziesięciu lat wydłuża się układ okresowy pierwiastków. Na razie kończy się on na Oganesonie (Z=118), ale czy to ostatni element tablicy Mendelejewa, który wyprodukuje ludzkość? Cykl "Fizyka wokół nas" jest organizowany przez Instytut Fizyki UMK od 2018 roku.
