La fondazione della Svizzera viene fatta risalire al 1º agosto 1291 con la firma del Patto Confederale sul praticello del Grütli, sebbene sul patto stesso non sia riportata alcuna data. Con la morte di Rodolfo I cominciano le guerre svizzero-asburgiche che dureranno fino al 1511 per il controllo dei territori d'oltralpe. Queste guerre contro gli Asburgo furono di fondamentale importanza nel mantenimento dell'unità tra i membri della confederazione, in realtà molto diversi tra loro. Nel 1315 Leopoldo I d'Austria è costretto ad intervenire per dirimere la disputa tra l'abbazia di Einsiedeln, sotto dominio asburgico e il Waldstätte di Svitto. Gli svittesi avevano infatti saccheggiato e danneggiato più volte i possedimenti dell'abbazia durante il cosiddetto Marchenstreit. I vassalli asburgici furono però attaccati e severamente sconfitti nella battaglia di Morgarten del 15 novembre 1315. Con questa vittoria ebbe inizio l'espansione della confederazione.
