Gone Home appartiene alla categoria degli indie, anche se è molto particolare sotto un certo punto di vista. Il gameplay consiste nell'esplorare la casa in cui è ambientata questa avventura interagendo con i vari oggetti sparsi per la casa, tra cui diverse lettere, per conoscere a fondo la storia che vi è nascosta. Tecnicamente e graficamente è limitato (abbastanza comprensibile, essendo stato sviluppato da un team indipendente e con un budget ridotto), ma l'ambientazione e la colonna sonora riescono a compensare una buona parte di questo vuoto. Il gioco è ambientato nel 1995, quindi siamo ancora in un epoca in cui vanno ancora in voga i VHS e le care e vecchie "musicassette" o cassette audio (i DVD che conosciamo oggi non erano ancora presenti in commercio, mentre i Compact Disc erano già entrati nel mercato, ma non ne avevano ancora preso il largo dominio), del grande successo del rock di quegli anni (le colonne sonore sono interamente composte dai gruppi rock, in particolare punk rock, Heaven to Betsy, Bratmobile, The Youngins), di serie TV come X-Files o 90210 Beverly Hills (citati nel gioco), e delle band amatoriali di giovani ribelli anticonformisti...insomma, questo è un tributo che ho apprezzato moltissimo, e lo stesso vale a chi è amante del "vintage".
