The Nintendo PlayStation was a planned hybrid console, a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony, designed to play both Super Nintendo cartridges and CD-ROM games. The prototype featured a CD-ROM drive, a cartridge slot, and controller ports similar to the SNES. Nintendo wanted to use the superior CD-ROM technology over their cartridges as the snes cartridges could only hold around 6megabytes of data whereas cd-roms could hold over 100mb. Using CD-ROMs would allow them to make more advanced games with better graphics. The Nintendo PlayStation was announced at the 1991 Consumer Electronics Show, generating massive excitement within the industry. However, unbeknownst to many, trouble was already brewing behind the scenes. The partnership began to unravel when Nintendo discovered that the contract they'd signed with Sony gave Sony control over any CD-based games produced for the console. This would of course result in huge financial loss for Nintendo plus a competitor having control over their CD based first party titles. Nintendo, worried about losing control over their own games, began to look for alternative partners. In a shocking move, Nintendo announced a partnership with Philips at the very same CES event, leaving Sony blindsided. The deal with Philips led to the development of the infamous Philips CD-i console and several poorly received Nintendo-licensed games. In the wake of the betrayal, Sony decided to forge ahead with their own gaming console, one we've all heard of, the now iconic Sony PlayStation. The Sony PlayStation launched in 1994, revolutionizing the gaming industry with its ground-breaking 3D graphics and CD-based games. It was a monumental success, establishing Sony as a major player in the world of gaming. As for the Nintendo PlayStation, only 200 prototypes were ever produced. The console became a thing of legend among gaming enthusiasts, with one of the few remaining prototypes being sold at auction in 2020 for a staggering $360,000. It was announced on 15 June 2015 and released in February 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. The game centres on Yarny, a small anthropomorphic creature made of yarn whom the player navigates through the environment, utilizing the unraveling yarn which makes up Yarny to solve puzzles, avoid dangerous creatures, and traverse obstacles. Unravel received a favourable reception upon release, with many critics in agreement that the game's visuals, protagonist, soundtrack, and overall tone were among its strong suits. But some others raised criticisms concerning the controls, variety of puzzles, and platforming. The game centres around its protagonist, Yarny, a small, apple-sized creature made of red yarn. Yarny explores the world around him that makes small everyday things look large due to his small size. By using the yarn his body is made of, Yarny creates rope to form bridges, pull things, and swing from items. His yarn is the main medium used to solve complex puzzles.[3][4] As Yarny moves, the twine which he is made of unravels, creating lines that the player must use to solve puzzles to progress through the game. It also serves as an extra challenge, because if he walks too far, he will unravel into a basic frame. This frame can be refilled by interacting with balls of red yarn in the game.[5] On this mechanic, Sahlin has stated, "It's always fun to play with physics. It's not just about solving puzzles. It's also a big part of how you move. Sometimes it's just traversing, navigating. Since you always leave this trail behind you, you can always grab it and climb on it and swing on it.
