TWO Zombies in one episode? ...and we were utterly devastated by Turk just a single episode prior to that! It feels so long ago that we backtracked all the way to the utterly useless Sherman Park to make our play-date with Blade. How nice of that mobster to hook us up! Of course, that's just the simplified version served up by the rather loose localization, seeing as how the lives of these high-schoolers are way more dramatic and detailed in the proper Kunio continuity! ... ... ...or, I guess it WILL be, because the series was still rather primitive as of yet, and this one was the origin of many of these soon to be recurring personalities. In the version called River City Ransom, however... they're lucky to have ANY personality whatsoever beyond "BARF!" and wondering aloud if this was fun yet... ... ...I'm history, dude! The plot is considerably thicker beyond the titular Ransom back in the land where Alex is called Kunio... especially since "Slick" didn't even demand an actual ransom... it was really more of a "Story"... Downtown Nekketsu "Monogatari"! Literally, there's "Story"! Some punk named Yamada held a grudge on Kunio ever since... a couple years ago, since they were friends before starting high school, but I guess he was a little torn up by a one-sided crush who fancied Kunio instead. So he showed them! He got into the city's top prep school! Reiho Academy! ...uh... I mean River City High! He began wheeling and dealing and took control of the student council. He even wormed his way into influence over several of the other nearby schools. A little EXTRA kidnapping! Some extortion! Some coercion! Very... Slick of you, Yamada... Overall, it doesn't really change the nature of the task handed to Kunio. His pal and/or rival (depending on the day of the week or the chronology of the games) Riki wants to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend, and he'll even agree to being Kunio's P2 to do so! The schools all align in roughly hierarchical pecking orders to take a poke at Crash 'n' the Boys... uh... wait... no, wrong localization... let's just stay far away from that one... ... ... but you WILL have to beat up on Nishimura... um, I mean "Rocko" to get the scoop on the real power players in this unholy alliance. Zombies! ...um... I mean, no... the elite beat agents of Reiho Academy itself! Y'know... they beat people up! They're Yamada's agents... of evil! ... ... ...okay, fine, they can just be "Zombies"... In fact, those four guys are so elite that they're keen to crib some big time Buddhist mythology, calling themselves the "Shitennō" or "Four Heavenly Kings"! ...um... yeah, that might not have gone over well with Nintendo of America's stricter regulation of what could or couldn't fly on their little gray flip-top box... it's also supremely dense to try to encapsulate for audiences that don't have countless generations of cultural immersion in Buddhist lore... even today, it's a bit of a puzzler to unravel how best to present the same idea... Although, it's somewhat interesting to point out that there are many works to escape Japan that choose to get around this little issue. Perhaps, if "Four Heavenly Kings" sounds odd to you, maybe you've heard of... the Elite Four? Four Fiends? Big Four? Four Generals? Four Guardians? The Spice Boys?! They're all the same thing! Wake up, people! So, this "Thor" who is the leader of the "Zombies"... is, in fact, Kobayashi, the toughest fighter at Reiho Academy... this abandoned factory is actually his father's factory... now defunct, because I guess the old man's pretty lousy at managing such things... so Kobayashi's pretty upset about the turmoil in his home life. Or he's just a guy calling himself "Thor" while he hangs out in a factory, but only shows himself to people who beat up his subordinate Zombies. Whatever! So, did you like the backseat tour of the seedy back-alley politics of being a high school tough guy... JUST in this one specific game? Did I mention there are more of these? A lot more?! Kunio's a crazy star in Japan! Don't worry! There'll be more! We haven't even made it to River City High yet! ...and their strongest fighter is already out of commission?! We made it close, though... but we were drawn back to some out-of-towner wannabe tough guys and promises of gratuitous nudity. Oh, right.
