I originally created the clipart sprites in Flash for #System47 screensaver by using the Flash's built-in rudimentary drawing tools. Each clip was just a static image, with no animation. In System47, I created a "info searching" animation effect by flipping a random static clip to another in several quick secessions. I recalled seeing similar effect several times on ST:TNG when Data or Geordi was looking up some database info from a display terminal. I thought it would be nice to repurpose these clipart images into #Starfield47. In terms of development, I first had to export out the sprites from Flash. Each sprite was on a Flash frame. With 30 something frames, the manual exporting job was time consuming and a bit monotonous. Although the sprites were in vector form in Flash, I decided to export them out as raster images with transparency option on. All clips were then saved into a single 8-bit PNG asset file so that the browser only had to request one file from the server -- smaller http request overhead. In Starfield47, the PNG asset file was loaded into an image element inside a SVG within the mini LCARS display. With some math & javascript, any sprite could be precisely positioned into the display box by manipulating SVG/CSS transform's scale & translate properties. In addition, I set a randomizer to flip the abstract-looking clipart either horizontally and/or vertically so that the clipart pool had more varieties. To make the overall style seemed less static, some image zooming & panning were added. And random SVG dashed lines & arcs were drew on top of the clipart layer. I then animated the dashed lines by only altering and transitioning their "stroke-dashoffset" property. Finally, a random CSS filter from a predefined set was applied to the clipart image to create even more variations for the final presentation. The ClipArt graph style has already been included in the current release. Since there are many graph styles to be chosen from, you may not get to see "ClipArt" style immediately. Tip, you can click the mini display's text title to reset the graph style.
