It was a cold, but beautiful day - and I had a new outlook on life. I was eager to be on our way to the next spirit beast. The spot for the mammoth that Froki had scratched onto my map was in the plains around Whiterun. We packed up camp and ate a cold breakfast in our saddles, heading to the southeast at a brisk pace. We had only traveled a brief span down the road and just finished battling a wolf when I both heard - and felt - a loud thud as the earth rumbled beneath us. I had a strong suspicion of what that meant and, when I turned to see, I was correct. It was a dragon. Another one! Where were they all coming from? With my newfound courage and determination, I charged towards the creature. Mjoll kept its attention while I hacked at its flank, leg and wing. Between the two of us, we bested the monster, although Mjoll got beaten up pretty badly. As it died, I felt a rush of power - and I remembered the same feeling from that night I fought the first dragon at the watchtower. This time, thankfully, it was not accompanied by horrible visions. I was dizzied by the sensations, and I knelt to the ground until they had passed. I had no idea why I seemed to be affected in that way, but it was no matter for the moment. We had defeated a dragon! That was the important point. Mjoll was surprisingly calm - had she even seen a dragon before? I chalked it up to her no-nonsense, take-it-all-in-stride mentality. After gathering some bones, scales and treasure from the corpse, we were on our way again. It was rough travel. The frigid air and harsh winds took their toll on me, and I feared I might suffer permanent frost damage if we didn't find a warm place soon. Fortunately, the road to Whiterun appeared and we were able to make it south into the warmer plains before I turned into a solid block of ice and fell off the saddle. As we turned into the plains, I noticed that bandits had taken over Halted Stream Camp again. With a grin, I turned to Mjoll and asked her if she fancied clearing out some vermin. Knowing her answer before she even spoke, I rode towards the camp. We made quick work of the bandits and then took a break to warm ourselves by their fire. On our way to the camp, I had spotted an abandoned giant camp nearby. It looked more like a mammoth graveyard, littered with as it was with huge bones and tusked skulls. Thinking that it might be a good place to look for our next spirit beast, I turned that direction. Sure enough, the mammoth was there. We defeated it without too much difficulty, though I weaved about in a rather silly way during our battle for fear of getting stomped upon. Feeling exhilirated yet also weary from the excitement of our day, I suggested that we spend the night in Whiterun. Mjoll agreed, so we headed off to the city. We stopped first at the general store and alchemist to both sell and buy supplies. Mjoll ended up with a new set of armor and matching boots, and she looked even more fearsome wearing it than she had in her previous gear. I stocked up on cure disease potions, as we'd already had to deal with some aftereffects of all the wild animal attacks. I did not want to be caught out in the wildnerness with no means of healing the debilitating diseases they carried. When we entered the Bannered Mare, I was relieved to see that the inn was both staffed and full of patrons. I was doubly relieved to realize that nobody recognized me when I took off my hood. I suppose I did look quite different now that I'd been cured and gotten rid of that horrible hair and makeup. One of the guards outside had seemed suspicious of me, but thankfully he appeared to be the only one. We spent an enjoyable evening there at the inn, with warm food, strong drink, a talented bard, and lively conversation to make the time pass quickly.
