I was able to find a path down to the shore below the college and, from there, follow the large island out to Septimus Signus' outpost. The man himself was as insane as his book. During our conversation, he admitted that reading an elder scroll had caused him to lose his mind. It was difficult to follow his train of thought, but I was fairly certain I understood the tasks required of me. Septimus knew the location of another scroll there in Skyrim, and he was even willing to read it for me. The trick was that I had to find - and use - some sort of dwemer contraption; from what I could gather, the scroll itself was located inside this machine. Septimus gave me two "keys" that I needed to use. One, a sphere, was a special musical tuning key which the ancient dwemer apparently used to lock and unlock some of their gates with tonal sounds. The other, a cube, could apparently be written with the knowledge of the scroll by the machine that held the scroll itself. In order to find this contraption, I had to delve deep into an underground dwemer city called Blackreach, and from there find a place called the Tower of Mzark. According to Septimus, the access point for Blackreach was a dwemer ruin called Alftand. It all sounded very complicated, so I decided to carry on with my current tasks first. Perhaps, if we could find Serana's mother, she would have more information on this other scroll. At the very least, I would hopefully be able to convince Serana to come along to Blackreach. Septimus' task did not sound easy, and her company would be more than welcome. I rode away from the outpost, crossed back to the mainland, and headed to Raldbthar. Since my previous visit, the bandits there had rebuilt their forces; however, I did not have to venture very far inside to find the crossbow schematics that Sorine wanted. It was a quick stop, and then I headed south towards Fort Dawnguard. Upon arriving, I met Dexion in the front hall and took a few minutes to tell him about the task I'd been given by Septimus. He was, of course, quite interested in knowing the location of another scroll and also in hearing that the dwemer had constructed a means of reading the scrolls by machine. I promised to bring him whatever information I could once I'd made the journey to Blackreach. Next, I sought out everyone for whom I had completed a task and informed them of my successes. They were all pleased, and Sorine showed me how to craft one of the new, more powerful crossbows. She also set me on another quest to find more dwemer schematics. This time, it was for some special bolts. The location was Bloodskaal Ruins which happened to be, much to my chagrin, back across the sea on Solstheim. When I spoke to Isran, he had a special task for me. Apparently a vampire had taken up residence as a new "advisor" to Jarl Balgruuf in Whiterun; one could guess what its motive was, and the jarl was in great danger. If I left immediately, I could get to Whiterun before the day was done. Although I was tired from my busy day, I headed right away for Riften to take the carriage. Despite paying the man extra to get me there quickly, the trip took much longer than I expected.
