Cuban author José Martí’s 1891 essay “Our America” confronts the unrecognized threats to an emerging Latin American identity. He calls for Latin Americans to come out of the shadow of the United States and resist the cultural imperialism of the U.S. and Europe, to “clasp hands and become one,” and to “go forward in close ranks, like silver in the veins of the Andes.” Martí’s concept of “our America” transgresses the expectation of what it means to be “American;” the U.S., he argues, does not have a monopoly on culture and civilization; neither does it have the sole right to the name “America.” As Chilean born artist Alfredo Jaar observes, “It is so embedded in [U.S.] education that the U.S. is America, whereas the rest of the continent is erased.” There are other Americas, but unfortunately these Americas are discounted as “Third World” or exoticized to the point of two-dimensional caricature. My presentation will explore twentieth-century Latin American artists who play with and disrupt (in other words, transgress) the expectations of “America” by re-imagining maps of the Americas, thus revealing how cartography has been used as an ideological and political tool. This presentation will include Uruguayan Joaquin Torres-García’s América Invertida (Inverted America), 1943; Jaar’s Us and Them (detail), 1982 and A Logo for America, as installed in 1987; and Argentina’s Horacio Zabala’s distorted maps of South America. These various works are transgressive because they represent a quest for Latin American identity not in relation to the U.S. or Europe (as peripheral spaces on Western maps), but on their own terms. Dr. Kristina Gibby is a Lecturer for the Department of Philosophy and Humanities. She teaches introductory Humanities courses, western civilizations, world literature, Latin American Humanities, and Caribbean literature. Dr. Gibby’s interests include time, history, memory, nature, modern art, and Hemispheric American Studies, specifically contemporary female authors from the Caribbean and the U.S.The exploration continues in Rena. It's a ranged monster which uses two physical projectile attacks with 75% physical to cold damage conversion, has 150% base damage, and is very tanky, at 405% base life.
