This work is accomplished through community based participatory research with tribal members, wherein research questions are developed collaboratively and from an understanding of the social structures, worldviews, and contemporary concerns of Native American peoples. "This work is beneficial to tribal communities for the retention and transmission of their traditional cultural beliefs and practices. It is also particularly relevant for archaeologists and land managers, as they are beginning to frame research questions around the traditions, values, and historical perspectives of Native American descendant communities. Their inquiries are beginning to extend beyond ethical and legal obligations to consult with tribal governments. Scholars are also seeking new and greater meaning in the landscapes and materials that they have studied for over a century. Archaeological interpretations are thus beginning to refer to the living legacies found in contemporary Native practices, as well as to the documented traditions that describe unfamiliar and esoteric aspects of Native American life. When I started out as a professional mermaid, I thought that I had to be a "mermaid princess" like the majority of mermaids that were seen on TV, in the movies and on the internet. However, my "inner darkness" slowly came out and plastered itself all over my mermaid character. I TRIED to hide who I was, but inevitably my REAL self shined through. When I first uploaded a video of myself as a Gothic Mermaid, I was scared that a lot of subscribers would leave my channel AND that my dark looks would cost me a lot of business... but guess what!? IT DIDN'T! If anything, I gained more support from my followers and the mermaid community and actually ended up inspiring others to come out of their shell and be themselves too. As far as business goes, I offer my clients options ALWAYS. But with that being said, I most people love my unique Gothic look. And that is why is sickens me to see people trying to be EXACTLY like someone else. I hate seeing people who try to be like someone they are not because it is popular to be a certain way, because that look is acceptable, or because they think being like someone successful will make THEM successful.
