When she was pregnant with her daughter, a psychic predicted that she would have a boy. The Chinese calendar said boy. “Everybody in the world said that we were having a boy, and we were convinced,” Lisa recalls. “Then the doctor told us, ‘It’s a girl!’. My response was, ‘Are you sure?' I wouldn’t believe it until I saw her for myself.” This need for incontrovertible evidence is partly why Lisa loves payroll. “Payroll is all proven. You have to follow the rules and the math.” Now the Manager of HR Shared Services for Best Buy Canada in Vancouver, Lisa has been involved in the payroll profession for 18 years. Like so many before her, she started her career with an accounting diploma, heading down the path to financial accounting, but a critical insight changed her destination. “I was halfway through my Certified General Accounting degree, but I realized I found accounting boring.” In her first job, the payroll accountants were with the HR department, not finance. The HR manager asked her if she’d be interested in payroll accounting. “I had no idea what payroll was – I just thought you got paid every two weeks, but I thought, what the heck, why not?” The world of payroll and compensation captivated her. “It was a whole new world and it was so interesting; you never have the same issue twice. It’s never boring because it’s constantly changing.” In her role at Best Buy, Lisa looks after all the technical pieces of payroll. She is responsible for the functional configuration of the payroll module, and acts as project manager for payroll-related subjects. Lisa has all the evidence she needs to know that her role is making a difference. “My work delivering the best employee experience through payroll has meant that Best Buy can continuously improve service delivery for its customers,” she attests.
