Transcript: Hi, My name is Simon Coakeley and I am pleased to have been appointed as the new CEO of the National Association of Federal Retirees. I have actually been a member of Federal Retirees for the last ten years or so, having joined while I was still working. Over the years, I’ve been really impressed with the quality of the services that Federal Retirees offers its members and the dedication of its volunteers. I became a public servant in the 1980s. I worked in small departments like the RCMP External Review Committee and large departments like Correctional Services Canada. I have worked in central hubs like Privy Council Office, the Department of Justice and the Office of Conflict of Interest and Ethics, as well as operational departments, like CSC. While I spent most of my time in Ottawa, I have also lived and worked 'in the regions' - most notably for five years at Veterans Affairs in Charlottetown - and for a year and a half in Moncton. I retired in 2013 from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada--Canada's largest administrative tribunal. Over the course of my career, I have been privileged to work with incredibly dedicated individuals and I am proud of the things public servants have accomplished. I have seen first-hand the difference we make in Canadian’s lives. The public service is a very important community--even though we sometimes don't emphasize it enough--and I am incredibly honoured to have been part of it. Each and every one of us who has retired from the public service has contributed to making this country what it is today - and that is a great achievement. It is incredibly gratifying for me to know that I will be working with so many of you, who continue to contribute to your communities and to your fellow retirees. As I join you on this ongoing journey, I want you to know that I believe that being a leader is much more about supporting others than telling them what to do. I share your best interests and will always have them at heart. We have already done much in our careers that we can be proud of and there is much that we can still achieve, including ensuring that our elected representatives continue to respect our contributions and honour their promises.
