Yet an ecological threat of underestimated horror faces the inhabitants of Ukrainian cities and villages. In our industrial city of Zaporizhzhya, the invisible weapons of mass destruction are not the tanks and bullets of an external enemy, but the neglect and cynicism of state officials, city leaders and the owners of powerful industrial enterprises. The current ecological situation in the city of Zaporizhzhya is critical, with the pollution level at an index of 8.7. Emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere annually make up more than 150 thousand tons, almost 100 kg. per capita. Many of these are substances designated as first or second class hazardous (manganese dioxide, benzapyrene, lead compounds, chromium, dust, phenol and hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen oxides, fluorine and chlorine). The main contribution to air pollution in Zaporizhzhya comes from industrial enterprises—the largest polluters which account for 70% of the total emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases. According to a WHO study, Ukraine ranks first in the world in terms of the number of deaths from air pollution. The state of the environment in Ukraine remains catastrophic: •spontaneous waste landfills and lack of waste management programs (by the end of 2012, according to the State Statistics Service, Ukraine has accumulated 14.91 billiontons of waste, including 14.3 million tons of harmful waste). •deforestation has reached a critical level (almost 30% destroyed); •absence of monitoring of emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere, •over the years since independence, more than 10,000 small rivers have disappeared from Ukraine's map; most of the remaining rivers are polluted,by industrial waste waters in particular. •minorfines for environmental crimes, as well as poor monitoring of harmful emissions and waste landfills lead to a growing list of Ukrainian cities and villages unsuitable for living. The figures given above are terrifying to everybody except those in authority. Politicians speak from year to year about the environmental situation in Ukraine from the rostrum of the parliament. But the threat remains. Numerous environmental and climatic public organizations appeal to the government and local politicians, yet their appeals remain only vivid headlines in the media and on Facebook. Our rights, guaranteed by Ukrainian law, the right to clean drinking water, clean air and an environment favorable for life and health, is callously stamped into the ground by the boots of oligarchs. "The disaster cannot be stopped by the efforts of individual people!" was a resounding summons during your speech at the signing ceremony of the Paris Climate Agreement at UN headquarters. Today, we frankly say that there are neither people responsible for environmental offenses, nor strategic plans for solving the environmental problems of individual cities of Ukraine, nor progressive environmental reforms. In desperation, we ask you to confront the people responsible for the depletion of natural resources that is leading to the ecocide of the Ukrainian nation. We ask you to appeal personally to Ukrainian politicians and industrialists, business people with a call to stop destroying nature and gambling with the health of the whole nation. They do not hear the ordinary people; maybe they will hear a voice that is known to the whole world? We formally apply to the TLDF Foundation with a proposal to write an appeal to the Ukrainian government and business to become responsible and effective, resolute and proactive in the process of saving the country from an ecological catastrophe that is gradually spreading throughout the planet - faster than the technological advances necessary to cope with them.
