It consists of two notes played together called an interval, in this case, the sixth. We play them along the same two strings up and down the fretboard. We discuss the correct fingering, the basic notes of the riff, the rhythm, as well as the embellishments that make this thing come to life. Once we've learned everything there is to know about the riff, we put it all together and we practice it nice and slow. The verse consists of some basic power chords and a basic strumming pattern. It's very simple, we just move the shape around and play a bunch of down-strokes. We then play the chorus, which is nearly identical to the verse just one chord is different. So, we once again work out the shapes, work out the strumming and put it together, play it together nice and slow. Finally, we learn the breakdown, which once again consists of two notes played together. In this case the interval is a third. We slide that third up and down the fretboard four times, and that is the breakdown. Now that we've learned all the parts we can talk about getting the right sound. I used a Les Paul with classic '57 pickups, going into a Fender Deluxe, which was cranked to probably seven or eight on the volume knob. That causes something called "natural breakup" and for this style of music, it would be the preferred tone. John Fogerty is famous for using his Kustom 200 Solid State amplifier and a six string Rickenbacker modified with a humbucker in the bridge. And odds are, you don't have any of that gear! If you just want to get a decent sound: Set up your amplifier your pedals, whatever you may have, to be quite clean with just a tiny bit of grit. That's going to take you really far. Anyways, now that we've figured out everything we need to do, we can put it all together and play through the tune. We play through all the sections, so we can get used to the transitions, and that's that. Hope you enjoyed this lesson.
