Which one is better, what are the differences? Let’s get into the nitty gritty! Bluffton has a population of approximately 27,000 which is about twice as much as Beaufort proper, without the Sea Islands. As a result of this, Bluffton has more shops and restaurants including major retailers like Sam’s Club and target. Beaufort is not necessarily known for brand label; at best, you’ll find a TJ Maxx and a Walmart. Most of the shops are mom-and-pop boutiques and trendy restaurants are commonly found in the heart of downtown Beaufort. Now you should know that there are two distinct areas to Bluffton - old town Bluffton and new Bluffton. Old town is known for its funky restaurants and colorful small art galleries. New Bluffton consists of neighborhoods along the major highway 278 and most of these are gated, golfing communities. There are over two dozen high-quality golf courses in the area so if you are an avid golfer, this might be the place for you! In comparison, while Beaufort may not have hopping nightlife like Bluffton, it does have a quaint downtown much like Bluffton‘s old town but it’s right on the water. H.C.Chambers waterfront Park is the centerpiece of its historic downtown. You will find several delicious, locally owned restaurants and shops. But what many people call Beaufort is really more than just the city of Beaufort; it is also a sea of islands. There are many very nice waterfront communities over one of its many bridges; you’ve got ladies Island, Saint Helena Island, distant Island, Cat Island, Dataw Island, Harbor and Fripp Islands, just to name a few. Because of this type of land and water geography, you will find much less traffic in Beaufort than in Bluffton. The biggest traffic jam you’ll see is when the downtown swing bridge opens for a passing sailboat, but you certainly can’t complain about the view while you wait! As I mentioned earlier, most of Bluffton communities are located off Highway 278, which is a very busy 6 Lane Rd. So, when people choose to live in Beaufort they do so because they enjoy a quieter lifestyle in close proximity to waterways. Bluffton real estate prices are at least 25% higher than the average home price in Beaufort, mainly because the homes are newer. This means that in general newer schools can be found in Bluffton. It’s also got active senior living communities like Sun City and Margaritaville. Now let’s talk about the beaches, Bluffton is only about 20 to 30 minutes away from the pristine white beaches of Hilton head where you’ll also find a number of hotels, resorts, and lots of restaurants. On the other hand, Beaufort is going to be at least an hour drive to the Hilton head beaches but a closer option is hunting Island State Park which is located approximately 20 minutes from downtown. It’s South Carolina’s most popular state park offering 5 miles of white less crowded beautiful beaches, and a historic lighthouse as well as a wide array of land and marine wildlife. You could even camp right near the ocean. Which place is best for you and your family to live? I suggest you spend a few days in each area to answer that question; after all relocating to the lowcountry may be the last homebuying decision you will make! Beaufort and Bluffton are very close in proximity and at the same time provide different living experiences. Come visit, choose the region first, then search for the home.
