Can we prove the Resurrection with 100% certainty? - No. But it cannot be disproven either. - This is where abductive reasoning comes in. - I will not be using the Bible to validate the Bible. This is important. So we’ll be using non-biblical, even anti-Christian historical evidence to establish our facts and only use the Bible to state the claims of the disciples. - If the Resurrection is true, then it’s safe to say that the Bible and Christianity are true. The SMOKING GUN: Paul the Apostle - Highly educated, well-regarded and moving up in the ranks of the San Hedren - Persecuted Christians, murdered them in fact - Saw the Risen Jesus - Completely transformed and become an Evangelist for Christ o Paid for his Faith the rest of his Life - Wrote 2/3 of the New Testament - What is a better explanation than what Paul claimed? - Remember he is also the one who said if the Resurrection isn’t real… IF you want more, if just the smoking gun isn’t enough, don’t worry there’s more! The Disciples Claim - They saw the Risen Jesus o Matthew 28:16, Mark 16:14, Luke 24:36, John 21:1 Is their claim more likely to be TRUE or FALSE? This is the BIG question… Undeniable Facts 1. Jesus was a real person a. Josephus, 1st century Jewish Historian confirms and even called Jesus a “wise man” 2. He was Crucified by Pontius Pilate & Died as a result a. Josephus, also Thallus, a 1st century Samaritan historian not only confirmed the Crucifixion by Pilate and the death of Jesus, but also confirmed the darkness that filled the sky at the time of Jesus death (Luke 23:44). However, he does not claim it to be an act of God, but “an eclipse of the sun” “without reason” 3. The Body of Jesus went missing (I don’t need this one to make the point) a. Jewish History from the 1st Century claim was that the “body was stolen” by Jesus’ followers 4. The Disciples claimed to see the Risen Jesus (as we stated earlier in the Bible) a. Important Point: One about People…they do what they believe is best for them b. So what would have happened if their claims were true? Counter-Point…The Disciples were Liars: - Why do people lie, commit fraud, manipulate people, etc? - What was “in-it” for the Disciples? Nothing good… 5. What did happen? o The Disciples were transformed in a major way (SMOKING GUN) o The became Emboldened Evangelists, traveling and preaching the Gospel all over o What could their motivation for this possibly have been? - The Disciples were Martyred (except John who died in exile) o CCC p.117 o Paul was beheaded by Nero o Peter was crucified in Rome up-side-down o Andrew was crucified in Greece o Thomas was executed by 4 spearing soldiers in the area east of Syria o Philip was “cruelly put to death” in Asia Minor o Matthew was stabbed to death in Ethiopia o Bartholomew was flayed to death with a whip in Armenia o James was stoned and clubbed to death in Syria o Simon the Zealot was killed in Persia after refusing to accept the “Sun God” o Matthais (replaced Judas) was stoned and then beheaded in Jerusalem o Mark was dragged to his death by a Horse in Egypt o John is the only one who died of natural causes in Exile CONCLUSION: - The only thing that makes any sense at all given this set of facts is that the Gospel Writers were giving their eye-witness testimony to actual events that took place. They were telling the Truth. Every other option makes no sense whatsoever. - Keep in mind that we didn’t use the Bible to validate this conclusion.
