The word affordable is a subjective word. Before I was a realtor, I was an ESL teacher for 20 years so I conditionally have my teacher brain on when it comes to words like affordable. What you might think about when it comes to the word affordable can be pretty expensive to another person. And what someone else thinks about when it comes to the word affordable, can seem really expensive to you. Of course, you could also live somewhere that’s dirt cheap, but what would you be giving up or gaining by living in a dirt cheap place? I’m not sure what your definition is for “dirt cheap”. But, my definition of dirt cheap is a single family home that is for sale below $145,000 (it will most likely need a lot of repairs), property taxes that are under $500 annually and homeowners insurance that is also $500 or under annually. Then, I have to wonder what the school system is like, is it a good area for my family, what will we do for entertainment? Is it a safe place to live? Is it diverse? These are some questions that we should ask ourselves when it comes to looking for an affordable place to live. First, let’s talk about the mortgage payment as this is usually the biggest expense in your budget: When it comes to buying a house, you have 4 things that make up your mortgage payment.
