Welcome to the MrExcel netcast, where we bring you the latest tips and tricks for mastering Excel. In this episode, we will be discussing how to forecast what number comes next in a time series using various tools and techniques in Excel. Have you ever been faced with a time series of data and wondered what number will come next? Well, you're not alone. In this podcast, we will explore different methods for forecasting future values based on historical data. The first step in forecasting is to visualize the data. We can do this by creating a chart, such as a column chart, to see the trend over time. This will give us a better understanding of the data and help us make more accurate predictions. One of the tools built into Excel is the ability to add a trendline to our chart. This will show us a straight line or a logarithmic forecast based on the entire time series. However, this may not always be the most accurate method, as it assumes a linear or exponential trend in the data. To improve the accuracy of our forecast, we can use a smaller subset of data, such as the last six data points, to create a trendline. This can be done by using the fill handle trick or by using the LINEST function. This will give us a more accurate forecast based on recent trends in the data. For those using Excel 2016, there is a new feature called FORECAST.ETS that uses an exponential smoothing algorithm to forecast future values. This can be especially useful for data with seasonal patterns. This feature can be accessed by going to the Forecast tab and selecting the desired options.
