This is rural Indiana and prime hunting country, where at certain times of the year, the woodlands are well-stocked with game [So many deer, so few sick days] and local hunters need few excuses to disappear into the forests with their bows and rifles. Jason Hudkins is a lifelong hunter and a precision engineer. A few years ago he and his wife ran a busy shop with several Haas CNC machines making parts for automotive customers. Then, business took a sharp downtown. Athens Archery has made a name for itself in the world of big game hunting and target shooting, with almost every part of its sophisticated products made in-house on its Haas CNC mills and lathes.So at the start of last fall, I told myself I was going to start reviewing touchscreen gloves. So I went and bought a plethora of gloves from various brands and cycled through a different pair of gloves every single day. With Nike, I went with the Sphere Running gloves. After using a pile of gloves over the last fall and winter seasons, I’ve come up with this question: Who performs better, these gloves with a stylus, or the gloves by themselves? With the Nike Sphere running gloves, the 4 dollar stylus comes out on top. Now that was just a really wordy, unclever way of saying “don’t buy these gloves”. At MREH, Monty and I base all our reviews on actual usage. And that also extends to Val, who also partook in these reviews as these gloves were hers. So in the next few minutes I’m going to talk about two things. The gloves as a pair of gloves. And the touch capability of the gloves. So let’s get started. When it comes to the gloves, the general quality is below average from my perspective. The gloves started piling within a couple of weeks of usage though Val’s pair did not. The piling didn’t occur in places where there was more friction, it happened everywhere. The piling became even more evident after I washed the gloves a couple of times. As a side note, despite being branded as the same model, the men’s version of the glove uses different material than the women's version hence the difference in piling. BUT both pairs claim to use fabric that circulates heat for lightweight warmth. Now the fit of the gloves weren’t too bad. I usually get annoyed with the fingertips of my gloves twisting a bit but it was fairly easy to twist them back with these gloves. The elastic along wrist area is snug and large so tucking it into whatever jacket was simple. Through this entire process, I learned that I’ve got shorter thumbs as every pair of gloves was too big for my thumbs. So that’s those are the gloves. Now if you thought the build quality of the product was subpar, well, the touchscreen performance was worst. From my understanding most touchscreen compatible gloves use some sort of conductive material to transmit electrical current from your body through the gloves to your device. To test the touch capacity of the gloves, Val and went and touched a bunch of different devices with different screen protectors. We both used the gloves on naked glass, double tempered glass, sapphire glass, we tried it with our touchpads as well as our Apple Watches. Prior to being washed for the first time, both pairs performed poorly. Basically the thicker the layer was above a naked screen, the harder you had to press or swipe. BUT after you got the screen to do something, it was almost impossible to do it again so typing with the Nike Sphere gloves was out of the question. After washing the gloves, nothing worked. These just ended up being normal gloves whose thumb and index fingers looked a little different. So at 30 dollars per set, you get a thin pair of gloves that you can’t use with your smartphone.
