Adagio primo Bailey Wantuch, violin Brigitte Poulin, piano Pollack Hall, McGill University May 3, 2019Allegro from Sonata for violin and viola da gamba in a minor The violin sonatas of Buxtehude derive in part from the Venetian church repertoire of the early 17th century (sonata da chiesa) as well as the Viennese school of Heinrich Biber. They evoke the whimsical improvisations and the dramatic flare in the works of Dario Castello, Claudio Monteverdi and Girolamo Frescobaldi with their alternating solos by violin and viola da gamba. This intermediate sonata form would eventually evolve into the more structured and stylized late Baroque apex form of Corelli, Bach and Handel. In this Allegro, one can hear the basso continuo melody repeated more than 25 times throughout the movement -- in the ostinato style of a Baroque chaconne. There is certain opera-like back-and-forth dialogue between the violin and the bass instrument (in this case, a viola da gamba) throughout the piece. In this latest rendition, I adjusted the attack and decay of the violin patch, created a more legato effect, tweaked the reverb effect and rebalanced the instruments.
