Of the 30 Mazas etudes in volume 1, this is definitely my favourite. Seemingly one of a kind, how many etudes do you know for the viola/violin (or your instrument if you do not play those 2) that feature a recitative, followed by what can be likened to a change of background and flurry of activity in anticipation of the next scene? On the practice front, the spiccato section (Allegro non troppo) was a further exploration from the 28th etude, requiring similar physical and mental programming but to be executed at a faster pace. The recitative on the other hand was to me far more interesting as it is one of the few times we can exercise the liberty of "not counting"! Bringing out the contrast of the soloist vs orchestra was definitely a treat. And...not forgetting the new equipment! I delayed putting this up for a while having gotten a basic set of recording equipment and downloaded new software (among other things), marking my beginning of tinkering into the world beyond simply using a phone to record my playing. This video does not use any editing/enhancements apart from trimming the front and back and syncing the one continuous take for the matching video and audio. Let me know what you think!
