An introduction to the work is on a separate video, which gives some history of the work. The cello part in this work differs significantly from the Cello Sonata. In order to make the work a Concerto, some of the piano filigree has been rewritten to be playable on the cello. The idea was to create a work that was about as difficult for the cellist as the Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos are for the pianist. Peter Eom said that is is very hard, and somewhat awkward, but that "it hurts less than the Kodaly Sonata, and is not quite as hard as that". A number of the big moments have the cello part transfered to the orchestra, with the cello part marked "ad lib", as the soloist will not be heard. Peter Eom plays in all these parts, and I imagine most other cellists would choose to do so as well. The idea throughout was that the cello line would always be audible, even if the cellist was not the one playing it! Peter Eom is the Principal Cellist of the Phoenix Youth Symphony and the recent winner of the Alexander and Buono International String Competition.
