It was at that time literally the largest country on earth. The Chinese T'and-shu chronicle describes the Khazars, generally, as "...tall, with red-hair, ruddy-faced and blue-eyed. " Letters were exchanged between Khagan Joseph of Khazaria and R. Hasdai Ibn Shaprut of Cordova, doctor and quasi foreign minister to Sultan Abd al-Rahman, the Caliph of Spain. (936-950) According to the ‘Hasdai-Joseph letters’, the King of Khazaria, Khagan Bulan decided around 740 A.D: "Paganism is useless. It is shameful for us to be pagans. Let us adopt one of the heavenly religions, Christianity, Judaism or Islam." Bulan summoned three priests representing the three religions and had them dispute their creeds before him. But, no priest could convince the others, or the sovereign, that his religion was the best. So the ruler spoke to each of them separately. He asked the Christian priest: "If you were not a Christian or had to give up Christianity, which would you prefer - Islam or Judaism?" The priest said: "If I were to give up Christianity, I would prefer Judaism." Bulan then asked the follower of Islam the same question, and the Moslem also chose Judaism. The Kingdom could only maintain its independence by accepting neither Christianity nor Islam -- for either choice would have automatically subordinated it to the authority of the Roman Emperor or the Caliph of Baghdad. This is how Bulan came to choose Judaism for himself and the people of Khazaria in the seventh century A.D., and thereafter the Khazars lived according to Judaic laws. Khazaria waged a more or less effective defense against all foes until the middle of the thirteenth century, when it fell victim to the great Mongol invasion set in motion by Jenghiz Khan. This entrenchment in the Jewish religion outlasted the kingdom itself and was transplanted into the Eastern European settlements of Russia and Poland. Composer’s notes This was a musical experiment with Arabic and eastern European elements. The string quartet, which was made up of principle members from the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, hesitated to play the piece at first. Because of its’ eastern Turkish or Arabic nature, they were concerned it could be misunderstood as some sort of East Turkistan/Xinjiang protest tune and possibly be offensive to some Chinese. I convinced them otherwise.
