At the beginning of this song, the black lady wearing the white shirt is backing away rhythmically from the bench where the older Asian lady who she was chatting with is sitting. It looks like she wants room to dance. Karolina plays the high notes of the 1st Violin, the lovely, soaring main melody. In this song, Raphael utilizes the higher range of his 5-String to play 2nd Violin supporting counter melody at the begining. Then he begins to use his extended lower range to maximum effect. I love Raphael's soaring violin counter melody at 1:14 sec. and again at 1:46 sec. He's great. I like how Karolina breaks into a big grin for Raphael when they take a dramatic pause at 2:10 sec. Great arpeggio run by Raphael at 3:14 sec. Raphael is a great collaborator. I really like the supporting flourishes of his violin to support Karolina's melodies. It make this violin duet of 'Despacito' great. Bravo! Raphael allows Karolina to shine as the featured performer that the audience wants to see, while not disappearing into the background. --- I haven't heard of Raphael Batista until I discovered his collaborations with the talented Karolina Protsenko. In studying the Karolina Protsenko videos, I first noticed Raphael as the tall guy wearing a navy T-shirt & black pants who was watching Karolina & Daniele Vitale playing their afternoon session at the 3rd St Promenade, Santa Monica, Nov 2021. In those videos, Raphael hugged and chatted with an older Asian lady near two green equipment wagons. In the next videos, I saw that he was a violinist getting set up for his turn to perform. In these Sep 2021 performances, I see the same older Asian lady sitting on the bench behind Raphael. She must be his friend/relative/Mom/Grandmother. She's obviously present to support Raphael. The lady is clapping and having a great time. Question: "Hey SIO, what's special about playing a 5-String Violin?" Answer: Karolina, like most violinists, plays the standard 4-String violin. But Raphael's 5-String violin has an extended lower range due to having a 5th string which allows the user to play lower notes like a viola would, while keeping the normal range of a 4-String violin. Question: "So, a 5-String Violin plays differently that a regular violin?" Answer: A 5-String violin requires a slightly wider neck to allow the user to reach the extra string when it's low notes are required. The other 4 strings play just like a regular violin. I am LA Arquero. I’m a musician based in the Philippines. As today is Father’s Day, I’d like to honor someone who brought me to where I am today. My father, Lorenzo Arquero, was the one who introduced me to music. Up until the last day of his life, we were playing music together. He loved playing the guitar so much. His love for music was the reason he set up Serenata Strings in 2005. My dad also played at the lobby of the Peninsula Hotel in the 90s with the Manila Pen Strings. I remember spending Fridays at The Pen with my family, eating dessert while listening to music the whole night. That is how I got to familiarize myself with jazz standards, bossa nova and classical music. When I turned 9 years old, my dad asked me if I wanted to learn how to play the violin. I believe that brought him so much joy when I said yes. Every time we would play together, he would be reminded of happy times when he would play with his dad, my Lolo Iñong, who was also a violinist. To Papa, thank you for everything!
