Dalí designed, lived in, and is buried in his Theater-Museum, in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain (birthplace of the surrealist artist) where we performed a TV friendly version of "Stairway To Heaven" (originally over 8min long, as heard in our regular concerts). The highly regarded Spanish TV3 program La Marató has been raising funds for charities for over 30 years, GuitarCello was called upon to participate on this occasion focused on mental health. This year almost 10 million euros were raised! It is an enigma: a flat neck connection like a Baroque style violin, wood pins to hold it together, a nice one piece back, the upper ribs mortised into the neck, solid linings, and smooth finishing on the inside. However, there were no C bout corner blocks, and the carving seems rather rough on the outside. After cleaning the dirt in the inside, a faint pencilled inscription was noted dead centre on the back, which seems to be some initials, a date "84" and the location of "Pirna". Pirna is a town south of Dresden so possibly this was made or repaired by someone in that town in 1884? Possibly. Certainly it has a Markneukirchen look to it. Anyway, it was odd enough, old enough, and enough of a challenge to try and get it to sing again so work commenced. The original fingerboard was laminated softwood with ebony coating, but it was cracked and unrepairable. It had been carved to the Baroque shape but there was no wedge needed as the fingerboard was thick enough. Schnefsky replaced it with a vintage laminated fingerboard of the same style, but a Maple wedge was used to raise it to the proper height. It is a short fingerboard in the Baroque style. Pirastro Chorda pure gut strings have been used along with a French Baroque bridge. The tailpiece is a salvaged vintage ebony and is tied on with gut. The original bassbar was integrally carved and very short so Schnefsky carved a new one to Baroque dimensions and glued it in. And if course corner blocks were installed in the bout corners. Es ist ein Rätsel: eine flache Halsverbindung wie eine Geige im Barockstil, Holznadeln zum Zusammenhalten, ein schöner einteiliger Rücken, die oberen Rippen im Nacken, feste Futter und eine glatte Oberfläche an der Innenseite. Es gab jedoch keine Eckblöcke, und die Schnitzerei wirkt außen ziemlich rau. Nach dem Reinigen des Schmutzes im Inneren wurde auf der Rückseite eine schwache Inschrift mit Bleistift festgestellt, die einige Initialen, ein Datum "84" und die Position von "Pirnas" zu sein scheint. Es war in Barockform geschnitzt worden, aber es wurde kein Keil benötigt, da das Griffbrett dick genug war. Schnefsky ersetzte es durch ein Vintage-laminiertes Griffbrett des gleichen Stils, aber ein Ahornkeil wurde verwendet, um es auf die richtige Höhe anzuheben. Es ist ein kurzes Griffbrett im Barockstil. Pirastro Chorda reine Darmsaiten wurden zusammen mit einer französischen Barockbrücke verwendet.
