Après avoir étudié au Royal College of Music avec Charles Villiers Stanford, Arthur Bliss, qui admirait Debussy et Stravinsky, composa en 1922 sa « Colour Symphony » qui compte parmi les plus belles œuvres musicales du XXe siècle. Auteur de 140 opus dont une « Musique pour cordes » (1935), un « Concerto pour piano » (1938), les ballets « Checkmate » (1937), « Miracle in the Gorbals » (1944) et « The Lady of Shallot » (1958), un « Concerto pour violon » (1955), un « Concerto pour violoncelle » (1970), les « Méditations sur un thème de John Blow » (1955), les opéras « The Olympians » (1948) et « The Beggar's Opera » (1952), ainsi que l'oratorio « Les Béatitudes » (1961), Arthur Bliss écrivit aussi pour le cinéma, notamment pour le film de William Cameron Menzies « Things to come » (1936). Nommé directeur musical de la BBC, il devint le successeur d'Arnold Bax à la maîtrise royale de musique et fut fait Chevalier commandeur de l'Ordre royal de Victoria en 1969. Le style flamboyant de son ballet en un acte « Adam Zero » composé en 1946, dont nous écoutons la suite de concert, montre un indéniable talent d'orchestration. Si, de son vivant, Arthur Bliss fut souvent incompris, la postérité commence à se montrer moins ingrate envers lui. La plupart de ses grandes œuvres sont ainsi redécouvertes.
