Sound engineer: Finn Fox All rights are reserved. chris ingres © 2019 ...I've decided to write some lines about Paganini today: I love his Caprices, not all of them...but many - and I'll try to record all the Caprices I love. There often is something very sad in his music, you know, let’s say: something lonesome - and virtuosity never is an end to itself because of these emotional qualities - on the contrary: virtuosity becomes a musical expression for a highly complex personality like Paganini was. - Yes, I'd even say his virtuosity is existential. This crazy mixture of melancholic and cheerful parts, - personal memories of his difficult boyhood, the "joie de vivre" of his hometown on the other hand, a busy seaport like Genoa: travelling salesmen, exotic ware from the Orient, people from all of the world, sailors singing songs of love and farewell while playing the guitar - all this may have been a strong influence on forming his unique style: enticing, joyful, forlorn. And isn’t it sad in a way to know that you are a singular phenomenon in music history? No one before - no one after? So for me Paganini is like a solitary tree standing far above the timberline, his leaves and branches trembling in the upper wind.
