O termo “violoncelo” foi introduzido na língua portuguesa no século XX. Até então, a designação do instrumento era rabecão, palavra que ainda se utiliza em muitos lugares. O violoncelo é tocado, geralmente, com arco, na posição vertical colocado entre as pernas, possui quatro cordas afinadas em quintas, primeira corda- LÁ, segunda- RÉ, terceira-SOL e quarta- DÓ. Dentes de cavalo é uma expressão utilizada para descrever este instrumento. O instrumento pertence à sub-família dos violinos, que engloba os instrumentos orquestrais de quatro cordas afinadas em quintas. Essa família se diferencia da familia da guitarra tanto pela afinação, que ali se dá em quartas em vez de quintas, tanto pela forma diferenciada do instrumento. A característica padrão do instrumento foi estabelecida por Stradivarius, em 1680. A partir dos Concertos Espirituais de Boccherini, o violoncelo passou a ser tratado como solista, e não somente como um instrumento para compor o naipe de cordas. Uma das primeiras citações sobre o violoncelo foi numa coleção de sonatas italianas anônimas, datada de 1665.
