Wohlfahrt Foundation Studies for the Viola Use full bows on eigth notes (frog to point or point to frog). Play sixteenth notes at either frog or point. Use approximately 1/4 - 1/3 of the bow for each sixteenth note. Practice making notes at the point and notes at the frog sound the same. Use bow thumb and forefinger to add pressure at the point - do not twist upper arm - keep it low. At the frog, raise upper arm slightly and balance bow with pinky to manage the heavy weight of the bow. Take extra care on string crossings, especially when crossing to the A string on a down bow. In this situation, make sure the upper arm crosses along with the bow.
