Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst (1814-1865) was a Czech violinist and composer. He was a child prodigy and studied from a young age with Joseph Böhm (father of the hungarian violin school) and Ignaz von Seyfried (Mozart's student and Beethoven's friend, he conducted the premiere of his Fidelio). He succesfully performed in all Europe, but had to retire at a young age due to health problems. He was called the Czech Paganini, and it's said that Paganini himself feared his abilities. For many musicians this fits wonderfully, but for many others it results in enormous problems, which not infrequently lead to giving up playing the violin. Especially for tall (young) men with large hands and strong bone structure, we need larger string spacing of, for example, 18 or even 19 mm and wider fingerboards to match. For (young) women with slender fingers, on the other hand, we need much narrower fingerboards and smaller string spacing of about 16 mm and less.
