Tralibane (Co. Cork) was O'Neills birthplace. In his stories about airs and songs, Francis O'Neill dedicates these melancholic words to the air: "When affliction beyond the power of pen to describe cast its withering blight on our home, this weird and fascinating air obsessed my waking hours for days unnumbered. To me no other strains in the whole range of wailing dirges so deeply touches the heart or so feelingly voices the language of sadness and despair." O'Neill connects the tune with a local legend about a mystic ritual performed under the Tralibane Bridge, and forgotten verses sung by a "disciple of the Black Art". From a more prosaic perspective, I would say that the main Francis O'Neill reference was the version from Mayo collected by George Petrie, under the title "The little red lark of the Mountain" ("Complete Collection of Irish Music", no. 383), in C minor.
