Her husband, Robert Schumann, was also a composer and was very much in the spotlight during his life and still today. In my opinion, and in the opinions of many others, Clara Schumann was a much better composer than her husband. However, woman were not given opportunities to share their compositions and have them performed during this time period. This is why you do not hear of many female classical composers. To me, these pieces are hidden gems. I love this movement in particular because of the beautifully contrasting sections. The first and last sections are in a minor key and are very intense and passion-filled. The middle section, however, is in a major key and is light, playful and joyous. It brings a picture to my mind of a child running around in a park chasing butterflies. One of the most difficult parts of playing this piece is showing the difference between those two sections through your playing. I also love the use of the trills and little grace notes throughout the piece. My favorite part of the movement are the last two pizzicato notes that come out of nowhere after a very intense ending. I just imagine Clara Schumann laughing and saying “tricked you!” Clara Schumann is definitely a role-model for women who have a desire to compose.
