El género de plantas epífitas Tillandsia L., con más de 500 especies, es el más diverso de la familia de las bromelias (Bromeliaceae), al cual pertenece también la piña, y se encuentran en los desiertos, bosques y montañas de Centroamérica, Sudamérica, México y en el sur de EE. UU. en Norteamérica. La tilansia o clavel de aire es una planta que crece enlazada por las raíces a los árboles. Las raíces sirven únicamente para aferrarse a una sujeción, tomando la planta el agua y los nutrientes literalmente del aire, a través de las hojas. Existen gran variedad de especies. Su habitat se extiende desde el sur de EE. UU. hasta la patagonia. Etimología: El género Tillandsia lo nombró Carlos Linneo en 1738 de tal modo, en honor al médico y botánico finlandés Dr. Elias Tillandz (originalmente Tillander) (1640-1693). Descripción: Las especies de Tillandsia son epifitas, es decir, en la naturaleza crecen normalmente sobre otras plantas, sin ser parásitos, generalmente en árboles. Pero también hay especies que son litofitas (sobre rocas, techos, líneas de teléfono, etc.). Pocas especies crecen directamente en la tierra. Entre estas plantas se pueden citar a las barbas de palo (Tillandsia asneoides) que parecen líquenes que cuelgan, como señala F. Oliva Esteva . El género se puede dividir entre variedades "verdes" y variedades "grises". Tillandsias verdes: Las especies verdes requieren un clima templado y lluvioso, y crecen por lo general en la sombra, ya sea en la tierra o sobre árboles en el sotobosque. Las variedades verdes carecen de tricomas (ver abajo). Tillandsias grises: En contraste, casi todas las especies de tillandsias grises crecen en áreas sub-húmedas o sub-áridas con alta humedad del aire. Prefieren el sol, por lo cual se encentran en los pisos altos del bosque o en rocas. Muchas de estas variedades son epifitas. Como plantas que prácticamente carecen de raíces tienen una forma de vida muy peculiar. Su apariencia gris resulta de la circunstancia que sus tallos y hojas están cubiertos por pequeñas escamas (tricomas). Éstos son pelitos complejos que son generados por la epidermis de las hojas y se mueren de inmediato. Las células muertas de las tricomas se llenan de aire, reflejando la luz, por eso la apariencia blancuzca. La planta es más blanca, cuanto más o más grandes tricomas tiene. Los tricomas se llenan con agua (chupan la humedad) y dejan ver el tejido verde debajo (la planta se ve verde) y la planta puede absorber más luz. En cuanto el sol seca la planta, esa parece grisácea otra vez. Así los tricomas no sólo sirven para absorber agua, sino también de protección contra el sol y la transpiración. Este truco permite a las plantas, sin raíces, absorber gotas de niebla o directamente lluvia para cubrir su necesidad de agua. Los minerales los obtienen de las cantidades pequeñas contenidas en el polvo que lleva el viento, hojas que se caen y materia procedente de los insectos y se disuelvan en el agua absorbida. Las Tillandsias, como todas las epífitas no son parásitos. Sus raíces sólo sirven (por lo general) para la fijación de la planta y no disponen de radículas (raíces secundarias, responsables para la absorbción de minerales y agua). Las variedades de hojas más finas crecen en áreas lluviosas y las variedades de hojas gruesas en áreas con sequías. ReproducciónLas Tillandsias se reproducen - como otras bromelias también - en dos maneras. La primera es la "normal" por polinización y producción de semillas. Tillandsias no se autofecundan y el polen tiene que venir de otra planta de la misma especie. La otra manera es la reproducción de plántulas llamadas "hijuelos". De la planta madre brotan, muchas veces en el tallo, nuevas plantas. Esto sucede por lo general después de la floración. Una sola planta puede tener varios hijuelos que pueden ser quitados y desarrollados solos por separado ó dejados junto con la planta madre, para formar una colonia. Cultivo y usosTillandsia es una planta de interior de aspecto atrayente, se desarrollan bien en el interior de las casas ó en invernadero, no precisando de suelo, ya que el agua y el alimento lo absorben a través de las hojas. Additionally, because many narcissists are quite lazy and in actuality very unintelligent, they use cheap techniques to achieve this false perception of greatness and will construct their sense of greatness as relative to those around them and instead of doing what is difficult and actually raising themselves up, they will instead lower others down. Lowering others down as a technique to manipulate ones own level to be higher by relative measures is as childish and cheap as it comes, and is quite simply the action of the most very unenlightened state of being a human can be.
