Apartir de agr vou começar tb a por musicas no canal!Since it is not time to dig up and store my cannas, this is a very casual video I've done because of request on the topic from gardeners who live further north and need to know what to do right now. When it is time for me to dig up and store my canna rhizomes for winter, I will put together a more polished video where I can show each step. The most common question I have gotten lately has been on when to dig up cannas for winter, and how to store cannas for winter. Here in zone 6, we often roll the dice and just cut them down to the ground in winter, then pile several inches of mulch on them. With my banana cannas, I'll be digging and store half of them, and mulching the others. I had a large segment of this video dedicated to talking about overwintering cannas in the ground, but I deleted it since it was off topic for those who live in areas where that isn't even an option. I will type out the basics of this video below incase something wasn't clear or you just want a quick outline to reference. Digging and Storing Cannas 1. After first frost, cut growth down to 4 to 6 inches above soil level. 2. Carefully dig around the clump and lift the rhizomes from the ground, being cautious to not pierce or break any of the rhizomes. 3. Wash soil and debris off of rhizomes. 4. Place rhizomes some place dry and out of the sun indoors, and allow to dry for several days. 5. Once cured, choose your packing material: wrap in newspaper, pack with peat, pack with moistened vermiculite etc. Be sure to stagger layers to allow some air flow. 6. Place in a breathable container such as milk crate lined with cloth or burlap, or a box with holes poked in the sides. 7. Store container in a dark, dry and frost free location until ready to start indoors or plant outside. 8. Check rhizomes monthly for signs of rot or desiccation.
