They were growing a small batch of the plants, to trial, before considering whether to launch the plant as a commercial crop. Unlike most other Diascia this variety is a a hardy perennial plant and also grows to a good height, making it ideal for use in the garden. The plant will readily grow to 1-1.2m in height but only really about 30cm in width. I have found that flowers are produced from early May through to end of September/early October. This variety of Diascia is also classed as a semi-evergreen, meaning that it still retains its leaves in all but the coldest of winters. Another bonus is that the plant is as happy growing in a shady position as it is in full sun. It's also happy in most soil types and tolerates dry soil too. As the plant is so good that I want to have it planted in multiple locations in both the front and back garden so need to have a few more plants, hence take a load more cuttings. Cuttings can be taken from July through to about September. Cuttings taken in the September are generally a little slower to develop. Now how do I take my cuttings? Taking cuttings of Diascia in the morning to ensure the plant stems are well hydrated, for a better success rate. Tools required: Clean sharp secateurs or knife, Suitably sized pot, Hormone rooting compound, Compost, As this Diascia has hollow stems you need to select growing shoots that are not too thick and that when cut do not have much, ideally no, of a void to the centre of the stem. If you cut the stem and find the centre is hollow then just cut the stem higher up. Cut stems just below a leaf joint and strip the lower leaves. Dip the bottom of the cuttings into hormone rooting compound If you have some. Make a small hole in the compost. Insert the cuttings into the compost and firm the compost around the stems to ensure there are no air pockets, and that there is good contact between cutting stems and the compost. Wait until roots have formed. Make sure the cuttings do not dry out. Once the plants have established a good root structure, with roots visible to the base of the pot, then the plants can be potted up Into a larger sized pot or container or be planted out in the Spring.
