A word for our regular viewers, while this video is not about becoming mechanically inclined, building things, repairing things or grooming a dog, this is one of our behind the scenes of how we make our videos and some of the tools we use for this. The former Power Tools and Advanced Edit are now found in the Effects tab, under Filters, Utility. In some ways these are way better in version 9 than previous versions, others I've had to change the way I use them. These are filters, so this will not so much change the clip but the scene below the filter in the timeline and only as long as the filter is applied to the timeline. Auto Enhance. Time Stamp 1:15 This tool is just what the name says. It's automatic, this means that it uses pre-set values to enhance the clip, you can control the degree of effect but no other controls. It enhances all of the clips it is above in the timeline, adds contrast slightly changes some other values but that is it. Border. Time Stamp 1:59 This creates a border around the clip or clips below it in the time line. This only affects the clips below it, so if you want the same boarder on all of the clips just put it at the top. The border can be any color and can change color in the path around the clip or clips. Crop. Time Stamp 2:40 This filter will Crop the whole scene that is below it in the timeline. You control the level of crop from the left right top and bottom. This only controls the scene below it in the timeline, so clips above it are not affected. The edges can be blurred but this affects only the scene below the filter. The auto zoom will change the enlargement of the scene below the filter in the direction of the crop, this can stretch the scene in any direction, for a change to reality. Face-off. Time Stamp 3:15 Face-off is a filter that is so simple that it only has one option to it, what do you want to cover the face with. This is totally automatic for face detection. As far as I can tell it only detects human faces and only in a video clip not a static photograph. A human face can be a real person or a 3d model of a human face. If the subject is not facing the camera the filter may fail to recognize it as a face. It wants to find 2 eyes or glasses over the eyes, and a roughly face shape surrounding the eyes. Even then it can miss this and not catch every face in the scene. Image Mask. Time Stamp 4:07 IThis doesn't work the same as the older versions. It is useful but not in the same way. The image mask operates on the scene and clips below it. It only gives a black mask to the scene, the controls are for positioning the mask on the scene and feather will blur the edges of the mask. It also has a switch to invert the mask but that still only creates a black shape to the scene. Stay to the end of this video to see how I did a work around for this, to create a mask that does what I want it to. Mosaic. Time Stamp 4:56 If you want to protect the privacy of a subject, the tool is Mosaic. After you put the mosaic filter in the timeline a single blur will show in the preview window. This can be shaped and rotated to the rectangular area needed. The type of mosaic is also available with many types of blurs, along with the Blur amount and opacity. The limit to Mosaic is that it doesn't move with the subject. Shape Mask. Time Stamp 5:56 This is a variation of the Image mask but only has 1 shape, a rectangle with large rounded corners. Tilt-shift Circle. Time Stamp 6:09 This filter creates a circular blur warp affect on the scene for any clips below it in the timeline. The position and size of the blur is adjustable as well as the intensity of the blur. This will focus the eye of the viewer on the area in focus and still keep the scene intact. Tilt-shift Linear. Time Stamp 6:34 This filter creates a linear blur warp affect on the scene for any clips below it in the timeline. The position rotation and size of the blur is adjustable as well as the intensity of the blur. This will focus the eye of the viewer on the area in focus and still keep the scene intact. Work Around. Select the right plant A big part of growing houseplants in your home is getting to know the plants that you have selected. * Talk to the employees at your local greenhouse about maintenance levels. * If you have a busy lifestyle, pick a low maintenance plant. * Deciding what will work for you and your light conditions. 2. Watering Knowing how to properly water houseplants is key. Do NOT overwater plants. * Always be sure to check your soil before you water. Making sure that the soil is dry at least 50% of the way down is a good way to gauge whether your plant needs a drink. * Be sure that you have proper drainage in your pot. Without having drainage in your pot, you are likely to overwater your plant, and put it at risk for root rot. 3.Choosing the right soil * As a good general rule, Jenny tells customers to use a well-balanced all-purpose potting soil. 4. Fertilizer Using an all-purpose indoor liquid food - it is generally safe to use on most foliage houseplants. * Feed your plants once a month during the growing season months, April-September. This can be reduced during the fall and winter months. 5. Knowing when to repot your plant Repotting houseplants at the wrong time of the year or growing stage of their lives, or choosing the wrong size pot is a common mistake. * Look for yellowing or dropping leaves. * Check to see if the soil is retaining moisture or if it’s drying out too quickly. It is best to repot your houseplants during the growing season. Spring-Fall, while they are actively growing. * Choose a container size no more than 2” larger in diameter on each side of the plant.
